Law Preparation

What to Expect

Prepare for life as a future Law student while studying on the famous Oxford University campus this summer, and give yourself the best possible chance of future success.

Our Law Preparation Academy is designed for students aged 15-18 who are certain they want to apply to university for Law. The course offers you the chance to gain expert insights, knowledge and experience to enable you to apply for Law with confidence.

Law is a highly competitive subject, and if you’re planning to study it at university it’s wise to learn as much as you can about what universities are looking for in prospective students.

The course will help you discover the wide range of Law courses available in the UK and across the world, and will support you to choose your perfect course.

You’ll get first-hand experience of real-life Law school activities, from case-studies, debates, and advisory clinics, to practising “mooting” in your very own Mooting Challenge (a mock trial) at a real court. You’ll also write an article which can be published in our Journal of Law. You’ll experience all forms of university learning and assessment (from lectures, seminars and tutorials, to independent research projects, presentations and essays). These opportunities will develop important legal skills, like analysing evidence, academic writing, preparing cases and representing clients.

You’ll also develop skills crucial to future success like critical thinking, sharpen your public speaking skills, have the chance to quiz an inspiring young lawyer about working in the legal field and meet fellow prospective Law students from all over the world.

The Law Preparation Academy will give you greater confidence handling conversations about legal concepts with peers, teachers and professors, will widen your skills for studying Law and will motivate you to prepare a compelling application to Law school.

You’ll achieve all of this while studying and socialising on the historic Oxford University campus and experiencing the very best of what Oxford has to offer.

The Best Courses

On our Law Preparation Academy, you’ll take part in a series of nine modules and a Challenge afternoon, structured around the topics below:

Our Law Preparation Learning Philosophy

During your time on the programme you will Learn the subject, See it in action and Do it yourself through an exciting Challenge:

Learn like you’ve never learnt at school before. Explore the key concepts, history and theory behind Law in a hands-on, interactive way. You’ll take part in small, dynamic classes led by our brilliant tutors who are subject experts from world-class institutions.

On your “Challenge” you’ll put all the theory you’ve learned into practice and apply your knowledge to a real life problem. It’s not the only practical activity you’ll do on your course – the course is full of opportunities to apply your skills – but for many of our students, it’s their highlight!

You’ll be given the chance to put your legal knowledge and teamwork skills to the test in our Mooting Challenge. Mooting is a mock trial, and a key part of learning about Law at university. In the Mooting Challenge, you’ll go to a real courtroom here in Oxford and put your legal knowledge into practice. You’ll participate in all phases of a court case, like you would in a real university mooting experience. Experience the work of a Law student and lawyer as you take on a key role in the case (from lawyers to the judge) and prepare to defend your side at trial. You’ll be able to demonstrate your new and improved skills in critical analysis, advocacy and teamwork, and experience the excitement of a high-stakes legal battle. Will you triumph in the case?

You’ll meet our “Heroes”, young professionals who have studied Law and gone on to build a successful Law-related career. Discover what steps they took to realise their potential, and how you can too.
