After some light rain the previous night, students and staff alike were glad to see the return of the sun today – some of our Young Doctors’ Academy were even discussing the possibility of sunburn! The first full day of the summer school began with breakfast in the houses, where friendships were begun over a continental buffet. Students then experienced their first introductory classes, meeting their tutors and bonding with their classmates, beginning to get excited about the weeks to come.
After a busy morning of settling in, it was time to get to know the city! Our Activities Coordinators led groups of students around Oxford, giving them an insight into the traditions and history of the city, as well as helping them to get their bearings! Highlights of the tour included seeing Christ Church, where parts of the Harry Potter series was filmed, as well as Broad Street, with its ancient buildings and exciting shops.
In the evening, everyone put all this knowledge to the test in a Scavenger Hunt around Oxford, where teams had to race against time to complete questions and tasks. One of the tasks involved running around the Radcliffe Camera and another involved finding a gargoyle that looked similar to an Activities Coordinator – some great drawings of these gargoyles brightened everyone’s evening. Dinner was eaten in restaurants around town, before the day was topped off with some ice-cream from the famous G & D’s ice-cream parlour. All our students then headed off for an early night before classes start in earnest.
