In the early afternoon our students undertook a walking tour of Oxford for their first full day of the summer school. Of course any good walk needs a hearty breakfast in preparation, something our students certainly indulged themselves with through the morning’s continental selection. The students then began to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings, undertaking introductory classes, meeting their tutors and most importantly bonding with their classmates!
After all the hustle and bustle of an exciting morning it was finally time for the students to get out and explore their new home for the summer. Being toured around by our wonderful Activities Coordinators who informed them of the deep history and traditions of Oxford whilst helping them to familiarize themselves with their surroundings at the same time was a great way to get to know the city! A particular favorite location of the students was Christ Church, the filming spot for many parts of the Harry Potter film, while everyone enjoyed the personal anecdotes of many members of staff as they reminisced about their experiences studying in the city.
The evening consisted of a treasure hunt around the city where teams raced against the clock to answer questions and tasks. One task that was loved by the students was the opportunity to have their picture taken in front of the Sheldonian Theatre in full graduation wear, and throw their caps in the air in celebration!
Dinner was then found, in a wide variety of restaurants in Oxford’s centre as the students ate their fill and were then whisked off to the renowned G&D’s ice cream parlor. The highlight for the Italian boys of St George’s was discovering that the pizza restaurant they dined at was “not too bad” – high praise! With smiles all around (who can resist homemade ice-cream!?) the students then walked together back to their houses, getting an early nights rest to prepare for the busy morning of classes ahead.
