The first day of the first 2017 summer school was finally here, and it began early for some of our Activities Coordinators as they headed off to meet students at Heathrow Airport, whilst everyone else got ready to welcome our first cohort to the Oxford Scholastica Academy! All throughout the day students were welcomed into St Thomas’, St George’s, and Lampl, and despite the early starts for many staff and students alike, everyone was smiling and excited.
After settling into their accommodation for the coming weeks, some of the earlier-arriving students ventured out to explore the city of Oxford. Our accommodation’s central location means that there was plenty to see only a short walk away – from the famous Radcliffe Camera, to Christ Church (featured in the Harry Potter films!), to Broad Street.
In the afternoon students and some accompanying parents headed over to the rooftop terrace of the Malmaison Hotel where they were greeted by cold drinks and fantastic views of Oxford. After enjoying welcome drinks with OSA founders Jamie and Sophie, at six o’clock the students said their final goodbyes to their families and enjoyed getting to know each other over a barbecue dinner and ice-breaker games on the terrace.
All our groups did a great job of getting involved, but Koen and Daniel were particularly commended for throwing themselves into the spirit of the games.
Such a long and exciting first day left most of our students eager for a good night’s sleep, and they headed off to bed early, ready to start their classes tomorrow. It was a pleasure to meet them all today, and we’re all very excited for the next two weeks has in store!
